Centre sets up search panel for National Sports Board under Sports Governance Act

The Centre on Monday constituted a Search-cum-Selection Committee to recommend names for the chairperson and members of the National Sports Board, a key body envisaged under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.

The committee will be headed by Cabinet Secretary Dr T.V. Somanathan and include Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao, Indian Olympic Association nominee and sports administrator Lt Gen (Retd) Harpal Singh, and National Sports Awardees Gagan Narang and N. Kunjurani Devi. It has been tasked with preparing a panel of candidates for the posts of chairperson and two members of the Board from among individuals with experience in public administration, sports governance, sports law and related fields.

The move kickstarts the process of setting up the National Sports Board, which will serve as the apex authority for granting recognition to National Sports Bodies and ensuring compliance with governance, financial and ethical norms.

The Centre had earlier notified the National Sports Governance (National Sports Board) Rules, 2026, and the National Sports Governance (National Sports Tribunal) Rules, 2026, under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, laying down the framework for regulation and dispute resolution in Indian sports.

According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Board will comprise a chairperson and two members appointed by the Central Government from a panel recommended by the Search-cum-Selection Committee.

The notified rules also spell out the Board’s composition, tenure, salaries, allowances, service conditions, powers and functions.
