Delhi-NCR may get break from intense heat as IMD predicts rain, thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another spell of thunderstorms, lightning and rainfall across Delhi-NCR, offering potential relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions.

According to the IMD, weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled on June 11 and 12, with partly cloudy skies and light to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly during the evening and night hours. The weather department has issued an orange alert for the national capital, warning of rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds on Thursday.

The IMD has predicted strong surface winds across Delhi, with speeds ranging from 50-60 kmph and gusts reaching up to 70 kmph. The advisory comes after parts of the city experienced severe weather on Tuesday evening, when wind speeds reportedly touched 111 kmph, causing sudden changes in local weather conditions.

Atmospheric instability is expected to persist throughout the day, with isolated dust storms, lightning and thunderstorm activity likely in different parts of the city. Despite the possibility of rain, hot and humid conditions are expected to continue, with maximum temperatures forecast between 40°C and 42°C and minimum temperatures between 27°C and 29°C.

The IMD said weather conditions are likely to improve on June 12 as rainfall and thunderstorm activity bring relief from the intense heat. Maximum temperatures are expected to drop to around 36°C, while minimum temperatures may settle near 26°C.

The southwest monsoon is projected to reach Delhi and the National Capital Region between June 25 and June 30. After arriving in the capital, the monsoon is expected to advance further into northwestern India, covering Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Beyond Delhi-NCR, several parts of the country, including Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and northeastern states, are likely to witness significant weather activity over the coming days.

In Uttar Pradesh, scattered rainfall is expected across both eastern and western regions. The IMD has forecast thundersqualls on June 11, accompanied by winds of 60-70 kmph and gusts up to 80 kmph. Dust storms are also likely in several districts, while isolated hailstorms have been predicted, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorms and lightning activity are expected to continue through June 13.

Meanwhile, Kerala remains under active monsoon conditions. Widespread rainfall has been forecast across Kerala and Mahe on June 11 and 12, with isolated areas likely to receive very heavy rainfall, raising the risk of waterlogging and localised flooding in vulnerable locations.
