The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vishvas Vidu Sapkal as India’s next Ambassador to the Slovak Republic.
Sapkal, a 1998-batch IFS officer, is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Peru and is expected to take up his new assignment shortly, according to an official statement issued by the MEA on Saturday.
“Shri Vishvas Vidu Sapkal (IFS: 1998), presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Peru, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Slovak Republic. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the ministry said.
During his diplomatic career, Sapkal has served as India’s High Commissioner to Fiji and concurrently to Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. He has also held the post of Consul General of India in St. Petersburg, Russia, besides serving in various capacities in Russia, Armenia, Egypt and the United States.
At the Ministry of External Affairs, he has worked in the Northern, MER and Finance Divisions and held key positions, including Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC, SAARC and Nalanda) and Joint Secretary (South). He also briefly served as Joint Secretary (Indo-Pacific).
Sapkal has been associated with several major international engagements, including the India-Africa Forum Summit in 2015, the 12th World Hindi Conference in Fiji in 2023, and the third Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) held in Papua New Guinea in 2023.
