Indian embassies and missions across the world have intensified preparations for the 12th International Day of Yoga, organising events and outreach programmes that have drawn participation from thousands of yoga practitioners and enthusiasts globally.
In China, the Indian Embassy in Beijing shared visuals from a Yoga Day event attended by scores of participants. In a post on X, the embassy said: “Mats rolled out, movement in flow, mindfulness in focus,” while sharing glimpses of the celebrations organised ahead of the global observance.
The Indian Embassy in Japan announced that its Yoga Day celebrations will be held on Sunday at the Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple. The mission invited residents to participate in the event and experience the ancient practice that promotes harmony between the body, mind and soul.
In Oman, Indian Ambassador Prashant Pise invited members of the Indian community and friends of India to attend Yoga Day celebrations scheduled to be held at the embassy on Sunday.
Earlier on Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Nepal, in collaboration with the Lumbini Development Trust and the BP Koirala India-Nepal Foundation, organised a Yoga Day programme that was attended by senior officials and hundreds of yoga enthusiasts.
In India, the Russian Embassy in New Delhi hosted a yoga session ahead of the International Day of Yoga celebrations. A senior Russian diplomat highlighted the growing popularity of yoga across Russia and its increasing acceptance as a wellness practice.
The United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, following a proposal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014.
Since the inaugural observance in 2015, India has led global Yoga Day celebrations under the aegis of the Ministry of AYUSH, with support from state governments, Indian missions abroad and United Nations agencies. The initiative has promoted yoga as a tool for holistic health and preventive healthcare.
The year 2026 marks the 12th edition of the International Day of Yoga. The theme for this year’s observance, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, underscores the role of yoga in helping people remain active, independent and engaged across all stages of life.
