Indian Railways has approved a ₹140 crore project for the installation of Kavach Version 4.0 across 598 route kilometres covering 48 block sections of the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in Gujarat, marking another step towards strengthening railway safety and modernising train operations.

The project has been sanctioned under the umbrella programme for the provision of Kavach with an LTE-based communication backbone on the remaining routes of the Indian Railways network.

According to the Ministry of Railways, Kavach work had already been sanctioned on around 702 route kilometres in the Ahmedabad Division. With the latest approval, the remaining sections of the division will also be brought under the indigenous train protection system, enabling wider deployment of the technology across the region.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance operational safety on the railway network. The system helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applies brakes in unsafe situations, regulates train speeds under critical conditions and reduces the risk of collisions.

The expansion of Kavach forms part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to improve safety standards through the adoption of advanced indigenous technologies.
