Monsoon drenches Mumbai; overnight rainfall reported in several parts

Mumbai witnessed heavy overnight rainfall as the southwest monsoon strengthened over the country’s financial capital, leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Palghar early Wednesday, warning of continued heavy rainfall for the next three hours.

The IMD forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, intense to very intense spells of rain, and gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph at isolated places.

The overnight downpour caused waterlogging in multiple areas across the city. According to weather department data, Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 78 mm.

In neighbouring Thane, a tree fell on several parked vehicles, including two cars and three two-wheelers. Fire brigade personnel and members of the Vartak Nagar Ward Committee Disaster Management Cell were deployed to the site.

Officials said the fallen tree was cut and removed with the assistance of fire and disaster management teams, clearing the affected area.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist through the day.

The IMD said conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, with these states likely to receive additional rainfall in the coming days.

“The southwest monsoon has further progressed into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, additional areas of Maharashtra including Mumbai, the remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, and more regions of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar,” the IMD said in a statement.

Despite the heavy rainfall, civic infrastructure and transport services remained largely unaffected. According to the BMC, all major subways in Mumbai remained open and traffic movement was mostly smooth. Suburban railway services operated normally, while BEST bus services continued without disruption.
