PM Modi highlights farmer welfare initiatives as NDA government completes 12 years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare and prosperity of farmers as the NDA government completed 12 years in office.

In a series of posts on X under the hashtag #12YearsOfKisanSamriddhi, the Prime Minister described farmers as the backbone of the nation’s food security, nutrition and economic growth, and highlighted various initiatives undertaken to strengthen the agriculture sector.

“Our farmer brothers and sisters are the pillars of the nation’s food security, nutrition and prosperity. Our government is leaving no stone unturned to make their lives easier. Initiatives such as PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi and the Crop Insurance Scheme are safeguarding farmers’ incomes and empowering agriculture,” PM Modi said.

He also highlighted the role of the PM-KUSUM scheme in promoting the use of solar energy in agriculture and reducing farming costs.

In another post, the Prime Minister said Kisan Credit Cards have emerged as an important source of affordable credit for farmers, livestock rearers and fishermen. He added that the government’s “Seed to Market” approach is helping ensure better prices for agricultural produce.

Emphasising the government’s focus on modernising agriculture, PM Modi said initiatives related to drone technology, Soil Health Cards and natural farming practices are helping improve crop productivity and farm efficiency.

Over the past 12 years, the government has launched several programmes aimed at enhancing farmers’ income and strengthening rural livelihoods. Among them, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) has emerged as one of the largest direct benefit transfer schemes for farmers.

According to official data, more than Rs 4.28 lakh crore has been transferred directly to nearly 9.5 crore farmer families under the scheme. Eligible farmers receive annual financial assistance of Rs 6,000 in three equal instalments.

The government has also implemented programmes such as the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana and the National Livestock Mission to diversify income sources in rural areas. Meanwhile, initiatives including the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana and the Soil Health Card Scheme have focused on improving irrigation facilities and soil health management.

Official figures show that nearly 26 crore Soil Health Cards have been issued across the country since 2014-15 up to March 2026. Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, crop insurance claims worth around Rs 1.92 lakh crore have benefited nearly 23 crore farmers.

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan Yojana is providing an assured monthly pension of Rs 3,000 to eligible small and marginal farmers, offering financial support during old age.

The government also noted that Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for major crops have been fixed at least 1.5 times the cost of production, aimed at ensuring remunerative returns to farmers.

According to official data, India’s foodgrain production has increased from 265 million tonnes in 2013-14 to around 358 million tonnes in 2024-25. India has also emerged as the world’s largest rice producer, with production crossing 154 million tonnes.
