PM Modi highlights government’s efforts to improve ease of living for middle class

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted the government’s sustained efforts to improve the quality of life of India’s middle class.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “A Government for the middle class… It is the NDA Government’s privilege to be working towards fulfilling the aspirations of our middle class. They have contributed to nation-building in countless ways. Over the last decade, governance has increasingly focused on improving the quality of life of ordinary citizens.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks were accompanied by a series of posts shared by MyGov India showcasing key initiatives and reforms undertaken during the past 12 years to strengthen the economic and social well-being of middle-class families.

According to MyGov India, India’s middle class has witnessed a significant rise in living standards under the leadership of PM Modi, supported by improved connectivity, tax reforms, digital transformation and enhanced public infrastructure.

Digital Connectivity Reaches New Heights

One of the most notable achievements highlighted was the rapid expansion of internet access across the country. India now has more than 103 crore internet connections, with data costs among the lowest globally. Enhanced connectivity has enabled millions of citizens to access online education, employment opportunities, digital payments and entertainment services with greater ease and affordability.

Modern Railways Transform Travel Experience

The government’s push to modernize railway infrastructure has also improved passenger convenience. The introduction and expansion of Vande Bharat Express services have significantly reduced travel times on major routes.

With 164 Vande Bharat trains currently operational, more than nine crore passengers have benefited from faster and more comfortable journeys. The introduction of sleeper variants is expected to further enhance long-distance travel across the country.

Metro Expansion Boosts Urban Mobility

Urban transportation has witnessed a major transformation through the expansion of metro rail networks across several cities. The growing metro infrastructure has helped reduce traffic congestion, improve travel reliability and provide efficient commuting options for millions of students and working professionals.

Improved Road Infrastructure Enhances Connectivity

India’s highway network has expanded considerably over the past decade, supported by modern road construction and streamlined toll collection systems. These improvements have reduced travel time, enhanced logistics efficiency and facilitated smoother intercity transportation for both commuters and businesses.

Regional Air Connectivity Expands

The government has also focused on bringing smaller cities into the aviation network through regional connectivity initiatives. The expansion of airports and flight routes has improved accessibility, enabling faster movement of people, goods and economic opportunities across the country.

Income Tax Reforms Benefit Salaried Class

A major highlight for the middle class has been income tax relief. According to the government, the tax-free income threshold has increased from ₹2 lakh in 2014 to ₹12.75 lakh in 2026, while a higher standard deduction has provided additional financial relief to salaried individuals.

These measures have helped boost household savings and improve financial security for middle-class families.

Affordable Goods and Services Ease Household Budgets

Tax rationalisation measures have also contributed to making several everyday goods and services more affordable. The government says these reforms have strengthened consumer spending and improved overall financial comfort for households.

Digital Governance Improves Public Service Delivery

The digital transformation of government services has emerged as another key pillar of the Ease of Living initiative. Platforms such as UMANG and Common Service Centres now provide citizens access to more than 800 government services online.

The digitisation of public services has reduced paperwork, improved transparency and enabled faster delivery of benefits and services.

New Mobility Solutions Reshape Urban Transport

Innovative mobility initiatives, including Bharat Taxi and women-focused transportation programmes, are helping make urban commuting safer, more reliable and inclusive. These initiatives are also creating new livelihood opportunities while improving transportation access for citizens.

Focus on Aspirational India

Highlighting the broader impact of these initiatives, MyGov India said that India’s middle class has benefited from stronger infrastructure, seamless digital access, efficient transportation systems and policy measures aimed at reducing everyday burdens.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the government marks twelve years of governance under the theme “12 Years Of Saksham Middle Class,” emphasizing efforts to empower middle-class families through reforms, infrastructure development and citizen-centric governance.

The government maintains that its focus remains on creating greater opportunities, improving public services and ensuring a better quality of life for millions of middle-class households as India advances toward its long-term development goals.
