PM Modi Highlights India’s Vision for Secure and Sustainable Global Energy Future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday underscored India’s commitment to placing the Global South at the centre of a secure, resilient, equitable and sustainable global energy future as the country prepares to assume the BRICS Chairship in 2026.

Sharing an article authored by Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar on X, the Prime Minister said India believes that resilient energy systems can be built through a combination of strong domestic policies and deeper international cooperation.

“As India takes up the BRICS Chairship in 2026, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar writes that India seeks to place the Global South at the centre of a secure, resilient, equitable and sustainable global energy future,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister added that the article highlights India’s vision of strengthening international partnerships to complement robust domestic policy frameworks in building resilient energy systems.

In his article, Khattar said the global energy landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, making cooperation and innovation essential for developing economies striving to balance economic growth, energy security and sustainability.

He said India would utilise its BRICS Chairship to convert this shared vision into concrete outcomes by enhancing cooperation among emerging economies in areas such as universal energy access, clean energy transition, technology, innovation and capacity building.

Highlighting India’s achievements in the energy sector, the minister said the country has expanded electricity access, increased renewable energy capacity and crossed 50 per cent installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources ahead of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target.

Khattar also highlighted measures to strengthen energy security through coal gasification, green hydrogen, electric mobility and expansion of the power transmission network. He noted that digital technologies, including smart meters and the India Energy Stack, are playing an important role in modernising the country’s power sector.

He said the complementary strengths of BRICS countries can help build secure, resilient and sustainable energy systems while advancing the interests of the Global South through stronger international partnerships.
