Red seaweed washes ashore along Thoothukudi Harbour Beach, draws visitors

Large quantities of red seaweed have washed ashore along coastal stretches near Thoothukudi Harbour Beach in recent days, creating a striking natural spectacle that has drawn the attention of tourists and local residents.

Marine enthusiasts said the seaweed, which naturally grows in the Gulf of Mannar marine ecosystem, was likely carried to the shoreline by changing ocean currents and seasonal wind patterns.

The reddish seaweed, spread across sections of the sandy coastline, has transformed parts of the beach into an unusual landscape, attracting visitors eager to witness and photograph the phenomenon.

Fishermen and marine researchers noted that such accumulations are a natural occurrence linked to seasonal coastal processes and environmental changes in the marine ecosystem. They said similar events are periodically observed along coastal regions and reflect the dynamic nature of marine habitats.

The seaweed-covered shoreline has emerged as a notable attraction in the area, with many visitors gathering to observe the rare coastal scene.

Earlier, large flocks of migratory flamingos were spotted in the salt pan regions of Thoothukudi, highlighting the ecological importance of the coastal habitat and the need for continued conservation efforts during the migration season.

The arrival of the birds has turned the salt pans into a vibrant natural attraction, drawing birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Experts said the region serves as a crucial feeding and resting ground for migratory flamingos undertaking long-distance journeys each year.

According to Mathivanan, Senior Research Associate and Coordinator at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Tirunelveli, flamingos regularly visit the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.

“Flamingos are tall, beautiful and colourful birds. Coastal habitats such as salt pans, creeks and inland water bodies provide excellent feeding grounds for them,” he said.
