The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first export shipment of premium Areko cherries and Scentrose plums from Jammu & Kashmir to Singapore, marking another milestone in expanding the global reach of the region’s horticultural produce.
The shipment, comprising Areko cherries (High-Density European Sweet Cherries) and Scentrose plums sourced from Shopian and Pulwama, follows the successful export of fresh cherries and plums from the Union Territory to Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, further strengthening Kashmir’s presence in international fruit markets.
APEDA, functioning under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, organised the flag-off ceremony for the inaugural shipment to Singapore on July 16 in collaboration with Osum Food Solutions LLP and Fruit Master Agro Fresh Private Limited, Pulwama.
Known for its favourable agro-climatic conditions, J&K produces premium-quality temperate fruits with superior taste, texture and shelf life. The export consignment was scientifically harvested, graded, packed and transported through an efficient cold chain while complying with international food safety and phytosanitary standards to ensure the produce reached Singapore in optimal condition.
According to APEDA, the initiative is expected to help growers realise more than 50 per cent higher returns compared to conventional marketing channels. It is also expected to encourage export-oriented cultivation, greater adoption of scientific farming practices and improved post-harvest management.
The authority said the initiative would help reduce post-harvest losses, improve value realisation and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for fruit-growing communities across Jammu & Kashmir.
The latest export is part of APEDA’s broader efforts to strengthen India’s horticultural exports through market diversification, export facilitation and improved logistics. By connecting growers with premium international markets, the authority aims to enhance farmers’ incomes while positioning Jammu & Kashmir as a reliable supplier of high-value temperate fruits in global markets.
