Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday congratulated Indian athletes Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh for winning silver medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and lauded the country’s athletes for bringing laurels to the nation.
Addressing the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Birla extended his best wishes to the medal winners, their coaches and the entire Indian contingent.
“Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh have brought glory to India in the ongoing 23rd Commonwealth Games by winning silver medals. On behalf of the House, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all the athletes who have brought honour to the nation, as well as to their coaches and Team India,” Birla said.
India enjoyed another successful day at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, with Gulveer Singh scripting history by becoming the country’s first-ever medallist in the men’s 10,000m event, while Harjinder Kaur secured a silver medal in weightlifting. Three Indian boxers also advanced to the semifinals, assuring India of at least three more medals.
Gulveer Singh delivered a standout performance in the men’s 10,000m final, clocking 27:49.78 to win the silver medal. The Army athlete remained with the lead pack throughout the race before producing a strong finishing sprint to place second behind Australia’s Ky Robinson, ending India’s long wait for a Commonwealth Games medal in the event.
Harjinder Kaur opened India’s medal account on Day 6 by claiming silver in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event. The Punjab lifter registered a career-best combined lift of 227kg, comprising 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk, to finish behind Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau.
Harjinder also set a new Commonwealth Games snatch record twice during the competition and improved on the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
