Heavy rain disrupts flight operations in Delhi, Mumbai; airlines issue advisories

Heavy rainfall disrupted flight operations in Delhi and Mumbai on Tuesday, prompting major airlines to issue travel advisories warning passengers of possible delays and urging them to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

IndiGo said adverse weather conditions over Delhi had affected flight schedules and that its teams were closely monitoring the situation.

“Bad weather over Delhi has impacted flight schedules. We are closely monitoring the weather and doing our best to get you where you need to be, safely and smoothly,” the airline said in a post on X.

The airline advised passengers to check their flight status through its website or mobile application and allow extra travel time to the airport, as rain-induced traffic congestion could delay road travel.

Air India also cautioned that adverse weather could affect flights operating to and from the national capital.

“Adverse weather conditions may impact flight operations to and from Delhi,” the airline said, urging passengers to verify the latest flight status before heading to the airport.

SpiceJet issued a similar advisory, saying heavy rain in both Delhi and Mumbai could affect arrivals, departures and connecting flights.

The advisories come as monsoon showers disrupted normal movement in parts of both cities, with airlines advising travellers to plan their journeys in advance and stay updated on any changes to flight schedules.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cloudy skies with spells of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over Delhi-NCR over the next few days.

The weather office has issued a yellow alert for July 7, 8 and 9. For Tuesday, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain at several places, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 32°C and 37°C.
