IMD issues red alert for Mumbai, adjoining districts as heavy rain disrupts traffic and inundates low-lying areas

Mumbai remained on red alert on Saturday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the city and adjoining districts.

Light rain was reported in several parts of the city in the morning, with visuals from Marine Drive showing showers along the promenade while commuters continued their routines at Bandra East railway station despite the weather warning.

Heavy rainfall also led to severe waterlogging at the main entrance of the APMC vegetable market in Navi Mumbai, disrupting movement. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad for July 4, warning of intense rainfall through the day. The alert has also been extended for Palghar on July 5.

Persistent rain has inundated several low-lying areas and affected traffic on key roads. With heavy showers expected to continue over the next 24 hours, civic authorities have advised residents to avoid non-essential travel as emergency teams work to clear waterlogged stretches and remove debris across the city.
