India, Indonesia deepen strategic coordination on global governance, Indo-Pacific, BRICS in joint statement

India and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to closer coordination in regional and multilateral forums, backing reforms of global institutions, strengthening cooperation in BRICS and the Indo-Pacific, and enhancing the voice of the Global South as part of the joint statement issued during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s State Visit to Indonesia from July 6-8.

Taking note of the prevailing geopolitical situation, economic and supply chain disruptions, and other global challenges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stressed the need for greater strategic convergence and close coordination in multilateral and regional forums, including the United Nations and its specialised agencies. The two leaders said they would work towards a more balanced and representative world order based on international law and grounded in peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity.

The leaders reaffirmed their shared respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, while underscoring the importance of cultural and religious diversity, pluralism and the rule of law as the foundation for peace, stability and mutually beneficial cooperation. They also acknowledged the growing importance of South-South Cooperation and agreed to strengthen collaboration to amplify the voice of the Global South.

On reforming global governance, both countries agreed to pursue meaningful reforms of international institutions to better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities and the aspirations of developing countries. They reiterated support for comprehensive reform and expansion of the United Nations Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories through inclusive, member state-driven intergovernmental negotiations, including text-based negotiations. The two leaders also discussed extending mutual support for international candidatures in multilateral forums.

The joint statement further highlighted the need to reform the global financial architecture and reaffirmed support for a rules-based, fair, open and inclusive international trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core. Both sides emphasised addressing challenges arising from non-market practices, concentration of supply chains and uncertain market access.

Indonesia reaffirmed its full support for India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026, while India expressed its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s role as a BRICS member. The two countries agreed to intensify engagement through key multilateral platforms, including BRICS, the G20 and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), to contribute towards equitable global governance and sustainable development.

Reiterating the Shared Vision of India-Indonesia Maritime Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific announced in 2018, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, transparent, rules-based, peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. They underlined the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, adhering to international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight, refraining from the threat or use of force, and promoting dialogue and cooperation.

President Prabowo appreciated India’s continued support for ASEAN unity and ASEAN centrality in the evolving regional architecture. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and encouraged greater synergy between the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) for Peace, Stability and Prosperity in the Region and India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) through concrete initiatives.

The two leaders also welcomed cooperation under the India-Indonesia-Australia trilateral mechanism and agreed to explore collaboration in maritime domain awareness, marine pollution and the blue economy. They also reaffirmed cooperation through regional frameworks such as the East Asia Summit (EAS), the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative and IORA.

On West Asia, the leaders expressed deep concern over the evolving situation and its global implications. They welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding signed on June 17, 2026, stressed the importance of de-escalation, and reiterated that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation, the uninterrupted flow of global commerce, and implementation of transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law, including the provisions of UNCLOS.
