The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has rescued 170 stranded people through a series of extensive flood relief operations across Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and South Gujarat, as relentless rainfall and severe flooding continued to disrupt normal life in the region.
Working in close coordination with the civil administration, the Coast Guard carried out 11 rescue operations since the midnight of July 22, overcoming heavy rainfall, strong currents and challenging weather conditions to evacuate people trapped in inundated areas.
The rescue operations began on the night of July 22-23, when Coast Guard teams rescued five people stranded in Khanvel, Silvassa, followed by the evacuation of three fishermen trapped along the flooded riverbank in the Kadaiya coastal area.
One of the largest operations was conducted during the night of July 23-24, when 60 people stranded in the flood-affected Welspun Industrial Area, where road connectivity had been completely cut off, were brought to safety.
As the flood situation worsened, Coast Guard teams rescued seven people from a bus stranded in floodwaters near Aero Fibre Pvt. Ltd., evacuated 10 people from Dongri, airlifted four stranded persons from the Valsad-Pardi area using helicopters, and carried out an overnight evacuation of eight people from the Reliance Industries area.
In another major operation, the Coast Guard evacuated 10 residents from the Avadh Society area, including a nine-month pregnant woman and another woman suffering from respiratory distress, ensuring they received timely medical attention.
On July 24, two Indian Coast Guard helicopters airlifted 33 stranded people from Mendar village in Navsari district. Among those rescued was a person experiencing severe chest pain, who was provided urgent medical assistance.
Despite continuous rainfall, swift floodwaters and hazardous operating conditions, Coast Guard personnel continued rescue operations around the clock, demonstrating their commitment to the service motto, “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect).
The ICG said it remains on high operational alert and is continuing to work closely with the civil administration to respond swiftly to any further emergencies arising from the ongoing flood situation in the affected regions.
