India’s installed renewable energy capacity has nearly quadrupled over the past 12 years, increasing from 76.38 GW in 2014 to 288.58 GW as of June 30, 2026, according to information presented in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
The figures, shared by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply, highlight the rapid expansion of the country’s clean energy sector as India continues to pursue its energy transition and climate goals.
Solar energy has emerged as the largest contributor to the renewable energy mix, accounting for 162.15 GW of installed capacity. Wind power follows with 57.44 GW, while hydropower contributes 57.24 GW and bio power accounts for 11.75 GW.
With the latest additions, India’s total installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources has reached 297.36 GW. This comprises 288.58 GW of renewable energy capacity and 8.78 GW of nuclear power capacity, reflecting the country’s continued shift towards cleaner sources of electricity generation.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy also highlighted the significant flow of investments into the renewable energy sector over the past decade. Between FY2014 and FY2026, the sector attracted approximately USD 45.72 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
Domestic financial institutions have also played a major role in financing the expansion. During the same period, 12 public sector banks, along with institutions including the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), Power Finance Corporation (PFC), REC Limited, India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited (IIFCL), National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), collectively deployed ₹12.32 lakh crore towards renewable energy projects.
The Ministry said latest figures underscore India’s accelerating investment in renewable energy infrastructure, with solar power continuing to drive capacity growth while public and private financing support the country’s efforts to expand clean energy generation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
