The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has approved an outlay of Rs 776.13 crore to upgrade 73 health institutions across the state as part of its efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
According to the Cabinet decision, 29 sub-health centres will be upgraded into six-bed Primary Health Centres (PHCs), while 19 PHCs will be expanded into Community Health Centres (CHCs). In addition, 18 CHCs will be upgraded into 50-bed civil hospitals, and seven health institutions will be developed into 100-bed hospitals.
The government said the expansion is aimed at enhancing healthcare facilities, increasing bed capacity and reducing pressure on existing hospitals.
To support the upgraded infrastructure, the Cabinet approved the creation of 1,600 regular posts and 71 contractual positions. It also sanctioned the engagement of 560 personnel through outsourcing agencies to ensure the smooth functioning of the facilities.
The Council of Ministers further approved an annual expenditure of Rs 122.83 crore for the operation and maintenance of the upgraded institutions.
Officials said the strengthened healthcare network will benefit residents of the immediate areas as well as neighbouring regions by improving access to medical services and reducing the need to travel long distances for specialised treatment.
“The initiative will strengthen the state’s preparedness to address public health challenges and improve overall patient care. The expansion of civil hospitals and establishment of 100-bed facilities are expected to particularly benefit rural populations, who often face difficulties in accessing advanced medical services,” a government official said.
The state government said the expansion of sub-health centres, PHCs and CHCs is expected to bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility and ensure timely treatment for citizens.
