NHAI steps up monsoon preparedness on Himachal highways, deploys emergency teams at vulnerable stretches

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stepped up monsoon preparedness across Himachal Pradesh, rolling out preventive and mitigation measures aimed at ensuring safe and uninterrupted traffic on National Highways during the rainy season.

According to NHAI, detailed surveys have identified vulnerable stretches prone to landslides, slope failures, debris accumulation and flooding, following which priority-based interventions have been undertaken to minimise disruptions.

The authority said critical locations have been reinforced through hill protection works, slope stabilisation, retaining walls, improved drainage systems and anti-erosion measures to strengthen highway infrastructure against adverse weather conditions. It added that special focus has been given to stretches that suffered extensive damage during previous monsoon seasons.

Beyond immediate protective measures, NHAI said it has drawn up long-term mitigation plans, including the construction of bridges and permanent protective structures to improve the stability of vulnerable highway sections.

To ensure quick restoration of traffic in the event of landslides or other weather-related incidents, the authority has strengthened its monitoring and emergency response mechanism. Machinery, technical experts, field personnel and emergency equipment have been strategically deployed at vulnerable locations across the state, while continuous monitoring is being carried out throughout the monsoon.

NHAI said it is coordinating closely with district administrations, police and disaster management agencies to ensure a swift response and effective management of emergencies affecting National Highways.

The authority has advised commuters to exercise caution during heavy rainfall and follow traffic advisories issued by the authorities. It has also urged road users to report accidents, landslides, road blockages or other emergencies on National Highways through the NHAI National Highway Helpline 1033, or by contacting the local police, district administration or the concerned project control room for timely assistance.
