The nation on Monday paid heartfelt tributes to former President and eminent scientist Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his death anniversary, remembering his outstanding contributions to India’s defence, space and missile programmes and his enduring legacy as the “People’s President.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute in a post on X, describing Dr Kalam as a visionary who played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s strategic capabilities.
“Tributes to a visionary and architect of India’s space and missile programmes, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Ji, on his Punyatithi. Dr Kalam Ji’s excellence in science lit India’s path to becoming a formidable strategic power, while his wisdom inspired millions to strive for greatness. The People’s President Dr Kalam Ji will always remain a role model for patriots,” Shah said.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also remembered Dr Kalam’s contributions, describing him as a visionary who dreamt of a developed, self-reliant and strong India.
In a post on X, Birla said Dr Kalam’s contribution to advancing India’s indigenous missile and space programmes occupies a distinguished place in the country’s scientific history.
He said Dr Kalam made knowledge, discipline, simplicity and national service the guiding principles of his life and inspired millions of young people with confidence, innovation and the spirit of nation-building.
Quoting the former President’s well-known words, Birla said, “Dreams are not those that come while sleeping; dreams are those that do not let you sleep,” adding that the message continues to inspire young Indians to pursue their goals with dedication.
Fondly known as the “Missile Man of India,” Dr Kalam played a key role in strengthening the country’s strategic and defence capabilities while inspiring generations of students through his vision, humility and commitment to nation-building. He passed away on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture to students in Shillong.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid homage to the former President, saying his contribution to India’s defence and space programmes, as well as his role in strengthening the country’s strategic capabilities, remains unparalleled.
Awarded the Bharat Ratna, Dr Kalam is widely regarded as one of India’s most respected scientists and statesmen. His leadership in the country’s missile and space programmes, combined with his close connect with students and youth, earned him the affectionate title of the “People’s President.”
His vision of a developed and self-reliant India continues to inspire millions, while his life and work remain a symbol of innovation, patriotism and public service.
