Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam after she won the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister praised the Manipur weightlifter’s determination and hard work, while extending his best wishes for her future.
“Yet another medal for India in Weightlifting! Proud of Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning a Bronze in the Women’s 58kg event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Her success is due to her hard work and determination. Wishing her the very best for the endeavours ahead. #CWG2026,” the Prime Minister said.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya also congratulated the 26-year-old lifter for adding another medal to India’s tally.
“Grit, grip, and glory! Many congratulations to Bindyarani Devi on winning a Bronze medal in the Women’s 58kg category and securing India’s fifth medal in Weightlifting. Keep making the nation proud,” Mandaviya said in a social media post.
Bindyarani finished third with a total lift of 199kg, comprising 87kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk. She had earlier won the silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth title, winning the gold medal with a combined lift of 229kg (103kg snatch and 126kg clean and jerk). Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 215kg (94kg snatch and 121kg clean and jerk).
Bindyarani was tied with England’s Eliza Pratt at 87kg after the snatch phase before edging ahead with a stronger clean and jerk effort. She successfully lifted 110kg and 112kg before failing to clear 116kg in her final attempt. Pratt finished fourth with an overall lift of 196kg.
