Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated teenage squash sensation Anahat Singh for creating history by becoming the first Indian to win the World Junior Squash Championship title, describing the achievement as a landmark moment for Indian sport and expressing confidence that it would inspire more young people to take up squash.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “A historic feat at the 2026 World Junior Squash Championship. Proud of Anahat Singh for winning the Gold Medal and becoming the first Indian squash player ever to win the World Junior Championship title. This accomplishment will further popularise squash among the youth.”
The 18-year-old scripted history after defeating Egypt’s second seed Ruqayya Salem 11-3, 11-7, 11-9 in the women’s singles final at the World Squash Junior Individual Championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
Entering the tournament as the top seed, Anahat remained unbeaten throughout the competition to claim the biggest title of her career. The victory made her the first Indian to win the prestigious junior world title and the first non-Egyptian player to lift the women’s trophy since American Amanda Sobhy triumphed in 2010, ending Egypt’s long-standing dominance of the event.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya also congratulated the young athlete on her historic achievement.
In a post on X, the Sports Minister said, “History Made! Congratulations to Anahat Singh (@Anahat_Singh13) on becoming the first Indian ever to win the World Squash Junior Championship. A phenomenal achievement and a proud moment for every Indian.”
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) hailed Anahat’s victory, calling it a defining moment for Indian squash.
In a post on X, SAI said, “A new chapter in Indian squash history! Anahat Singh defeats Ruqayya Salem of Egypt in a commanding 3-0 victory to win the Gold Medal in the Women’s Singles Final at the 2026 World Junior Squash Championship. With this remarkable achievement, Anahat becomes the first Indian ever to win the World Junior Squash Championship title, creating a landmark moment for Indian squash and inspiring a new generation of champions. Congratulations, Anahat!”
Anahat’s triumph comes after an impressive run to the title. She became the first Indian in 21 years to reach the final of the World Junior Squash Championships after defeating Egypt’s Barb Sameh in the semifinals before overcoming another Egyptian opponent in the title clash.
Already regarded as one of India’s brightest squash talents, Anahat won two bronze medals at the 2022 Asian Games at the age of 15 and has represented the country at the Commonwealth Games. Her latest achievement is expected to provide a significant boost to Indian squash ahead of the sport’s debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
