Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn in Melbourne.
During his meeting with Governor-General Mostyn, PM Modi reviewed the growing depth and diversity of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction over the steady expansion of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The two leaders welcomed the growing economic engagement between the two countries and expressed confidence that stronger trade, investment, education and innovation partnerships would create new opportunities and deliver tangible benefits to the people of both nations.
They also highlighted the increasing sporting cooperation between India and Australia and called for closer collaboration in the lead-up to the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India and the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.
PM Modi said the vibrant people-to-people ties between India and Australia continue to be a key pillar of the bilateral relationship. He also appreciated Governor-General Mostyn for her steadfast support in advancing India-Australia relations.
In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders exchanged views on the enduring bonds between India and Australia, anchored in shared democratic values, strong people-to-people connections and expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
PM Modi also expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of his summit talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and noted that the growing Indian diaspora continues to strengthen the close and multifaceted partnership between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi met Victoria Governor Professor Margaret Gardner at the Government House in Victoria. The discussions focused on expanding educational linkages between India and the Australian state, including academic collaborations, research partnerships and student mobility. Both sides acknowledged that strong people-to-people ties remain a cornerstone of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
PM Modi also met former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, with whom he reviewed the progress made in bilateral ties during Morrison’s tenure.
“Always good to catch up with Mr. Scott Morrison, former Prime Minister of Australia. We had a great conversation on the India-Australia friendship,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
According to the MEA, the two leaders discussed the significant progress achieved under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and warmly recalled the major strides made in bilateral relations during Morrison’s tenure, which continue to strengthen the bonds between the people of India and Australia.
The meetings were held on the sidelines of PM Modi’s visit to Australia for the third India-Australia Annual Summit, during which both countries announced a series of initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation in defence, trade, energy, critical technologies, education and people-to-people exchanges.
