PM Modi mourns demise of Qatar’s former Amir, calls him a ‘visionary leader’ and ‘true friend’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed grief over the demise of Qatar’s former Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a “visionary leader” who transformed Qatar and was seen as a “true friend” of India.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 74, according to an announcement by the Amiri Diwan.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “We deeply mourn the passing of Father Amir of the State of Qatar, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. A visionary leader who led Qatar to great levels of development and prosperity, we remember him also as a true friend whom I had the honour of meeting during my last visit to Qatar in February 2024. I convey my sincere condolences to the Amir of Qatar, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the entire royal family and people of Qatar. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace.”

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before voluntarily handing over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. During his 18-year reign, Qatar witnessed rapid economic, social and cultural transformation, significantly enhancing its regional and global standing, according to the Amiri Diwan.
