PM Modi, Prabowo expand cooperation in science, space, nuclear energy and emerging technologies

India and Indonesia have agreed to significantly deepen cooperation in science and technology, space exploration, nuclear energy and emerging technologies, reaffirming their commitment to expanding research partnerships and collaboration in strategic sectors during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s State Visit to Indonesia from July 6-8.

The commitments form part of the joint statement issued following bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, aimed at strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The two leaders welcomed the inaugural Joint Commission Meeting on Science and Technology, held on August 12, 2025, and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Research, Technology and Innovation Cooperation between the two countries, describing it as an important step towards strengthening bilateral collaboration in scientific research and innovation.

On space cooperation, the leaders expressed satisfaction over the growing partnership between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). They also welcomed the successful convening of the sixth Joint Commission Meeting on Outer Space Cooperation, held in Bengaluru on June 24-25, 2026, and the signing of the extension of the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in the Exploration and Uses of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes.

Prime Minister Modi thanked President Prabowo for Indonesia’s continued support to India’s satellite and launch vehicle programmes, as well as to the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission through collaborative arrangements between BRIN and ISRO and the Biak Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TTC) facilities.

President Prabowo, in turn, appreciated India’s support for launching Indonesian satellites and for training Indonesian officials through institutions such as the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (CSSTEAP), as well as under the ASEAN-India space cooperation framework. He also welcomed collaboration at the broader space ecosystem level, including India’s participation in Indonesia’s proposed spaceport project.

The two leaders also noted the ongoing discussions on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, saying such collaboration would strengthen joint research, capacity building and nuclear safety. They welcomed efforts to promote civil nuclear energy and related regulatory and technological advancements, including applications in industry, nuclear medicine, agriculture and water management.
