President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated athletes Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur on winning silver medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, praising their performances and saying they had brought pride to the nation.
In a post on X, President Murmu hailed Gulveer Singh for scripting history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m event.
“Hearty congratulations to Gulveer Singh on your splendid achievement! By winning the silver medal in the men’s 10,000m race at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, you have earned India its first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m event. The nation is proud of you. I wish you many more laurels in future,” the President wrote on X.
President Murmu also congratulated weightlifter Harjinder Kaur, who clinched silver in the women’s 69kg category.
“Heartiest congratulations to Harjinder Kaur on clinching the silver medal in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. You have made India proud with your spirited performance. May you continue to scale new heights of success,” she said.
Vice-President Radhakrishnan also lauded the two athletes, saying their achievements would inspire aspiring sportspersons across the country.
“Many congratulations to Harjinder Kaur on winning the silver medal in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event and to Gulveer Singh on securing the silver medal in the men’s 10,000m race at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026,” he wrote on X.
“Your outstanding performances have brought great pride to the nation. Harjinder’s determination and Gulveer’s historic feat as India’s first Commonwealth Games medallist in the men’s 10,000m event will inspire countless young athletes. Wishing you both continued success and many more milestones in the years to come,” he added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated the medal winners, describing Gulveer’s achievement as “historic and exemplary”.
“Historic and exemplary! Congratulations to Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh on winning the silver medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games 2026. This success is even more special as he becomes the first Indian ever to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event,” Singh posted on X.
He said Gulveer’s success was the result of his talent, hard work and determination.
“This is the result of his unparalleled talent, hard work and unwavering determination. His incredible hard work and dedication have made the nation proud. Best wishes for his future endeavours,” he said.
Congratulating Harjinder Kaur, the Defence Minister wrote: “Yet another medal for India in weightlifting! Proud of Harjinder Kaur for winning silver in the women’s 69kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. She personifies excellence and remarkable commitment to sports. Congratulations to her! Wishing her the very best for the endeavours ahead.”
India continued its impressive run in Glasgow with Gulveer and Harjinder adding two more silver medals to the tally, while three Indian boxers booked their places in the semifinals to guarantee at least three more medals.
Gulveer produced a memorable run in the men’s 10,000m, clocking 27:49.78 to finish behind Australia’s Ky Robinson and becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event.
Harjinder opened India’s medal account for the day with a career-best total of 227kg in the women’s 69kg competition, lifting 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk to finish behind Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau. She also rewrote the Commonwealth Games snatch record twice and improved on the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham 2022 Games.
