The Union Cabinet’s approval for the four-laning of key stretches of National Highway-63 and National Highway-563 is set to transform connectivity across northern Telangana, with the projects expected to improve mobility, strengthen trade and logistics, enhance tourism and support the region’s agricultural and industrial economy.
Approved by the Union Cabinet last month, the projects involve the four-laning of the Armoor-Jagtial-Mancherial section of NH-63 and the Jagtial-Karimnagar section of NH-563, covering a combined length of 190.76 kilometres at an estimated investment of ₹7,597.16 crore.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), the Armoor-Jagtial-Mancherial stretch will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), while the Jagtial-Karimnagar section will be executed on a Build-Operate-Transfer (Toll) basis.
The projects aim to ease congestion on two of northern Telangana’s busiest highway corridors, where rising traffic volumes and expanding economic activity have put increasing pressure on existing road infrastructure. Once completed, the upgraded highways are expected to improve connectivity between pilgrimage centres, industrial hubs, logistics corridors and agricultural markets.
The enhanced road network is also expected to provide a significant boost to religious and heritage tourism by improving access to prominent destinations, including the Vemulawada Temple, Kondagattu Anjaneya Swamy Temple, Dharmapuri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Kaleshwaram Temple and the historic Nagunur Fort.
MoRTH said the upgraded highways will make travel faster, safer and more comfortable for pilgrims and tourists while encouraging multi-destination travel. Increased tourist arrivals are also expected to generate economic opportunities for local businesses, transport operators, hospitality services and artisans.
Beyond tourism, the highway expansion is expected to strengthen northern Telangana’s role as an important centre for agriculture, food processing, fisheries and manufacturing.
The improved corridors will enhance connectivity to fisheries and seafood clusters, including Special Economic Zones in Siddipet and Warangal, as well as Mega Food Parks located in Nizamabad and Siddipet. Better road infrastructure is expected to reduce logistics costs, enable faster transportation of raw materials and finished products, and improve market access for farmers and industries.
The projects are also aligned with the PM Gati Shakti initiative by improving connectivity among economic, social and logistics hubs, thereby supporting integrated supply chains and infrastructure-led regional development.
The districts served by NH-63 and NH-563 are major producers of paddy, maize, cotton, turmeric and horticultural crops. The upgraded highways are expected to provide farmers with quicker access to mandis, warehouses, processing centres and consumer markets while facilitating the efficient movement of agricultural produce and seafood exports. Improved connectivity is also expected to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle operating costs, making freight transportation more efficient.
MoRTH said the projects would further support the growth of food processing industries by strengthening linkages between farms, cold storage facilities, food parks and processing units, thereby encouraging value addition and reducing wastage of perishable commodities.
From a strategic perspective, the upgraded highway network will strengthen connectivity with NH-44, India’s longest north-south highway corridor, while also improving links with NH-363 and NH-163G. The projects will facilitate smoother movement between major urban and industrial centres and improve regional connectivity on important routes such as Nagpur-Hyderabad and Nagpur-Vijayawada.
Upon completion, travel time between Armoor and Mancherial is expected to reduce by around one hour and 30 minutes, while the journey between Jagtial and Karimnagar is likely to be shortened by approximately 45 minutes.
Currently, traffic on both corridors is frequently affected by congestion as the highways pass through densely populated towns and expanding urban centres. The Armoor-Jagtial-Mancherial route traverses built-up areas such as Anksapoor, Korutla, Jagtial, Dharmapuri, Lakshettipet and Mancherial, while the Jagtial-Karimnagar stretch passes through Jagtial, Potharam, Gangadhara and Karimnagar, where increasing traffic volumes have led to persistent bottlenecks.
According to MoRTH, the four-laning projects are expected to address these challenges by creating a modern, high-capacity highway network that will support safer and faster travel while driving long-term economic growth and regional development across northern Telangana.
