Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu are likely to remain 3 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal until July 16, with hot and humid conditions expected to continue in several parts of the state, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, said.
Despite the ongoing southwest monsoon, Tamil Nadu has witnessed weak monsoon activity, resulting in below-normal rainfall in many regions and a continuation of summer-like conditions even in mid-July.
The weather office warned that coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to experience discomfort due to the combination of high temperatures and increased humidity. Residents have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during afternoon hours, and maintain adequate hydration.
The intensity of the heat was reflected in Sunday’s temperature readings, with 14 locations across the state recording maximum temperatures of 37.8 degrees Celsius or above.
Vellore recorded the highest temperature at 41.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Madurai Airport at 41.1 degrees Celsius and Madurai city at 40.6 degrees Celsius. Tiruttani and Chennai’s Meenambakkam observatory recorded 40 degrees Celsius each.
Tiruchy and Cuddalore registered 39.4 degrees Celsius, while Palayamkottai and Chennai’s Nungambakkam weather station recorded 38.9 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures also crossed 38.6 degrees Celsius in Nagapattinam, Erode, Karur Paramathi, Parangipettai and Namakkal, indicating the widespread impact of the heat across the state.
Meteorologists attributed the prolonged hot spell to subdued southwest monsoon activity, which has restricted rainfall and allowed daytime temperatures to remain above normal.
The RMC said the lack of widespread cloud cover and rain has contributed to the persistence of heat conditions. It has forecast light rainfall in the Western Ghats districts on Tuesday, which may provide temporary relief in hilly areas but is unlikely to significantly lower temperatures in the plains.
Hot and humid weather conditions are expected to continue across Tamil Nadu until at least July 16.
