Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu on Wednesday reviewed the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-U 2.0, stating that more than 127 lakh houses have been sanctioned under the two schemes, with over 99 lakh houses completed and more than 96 lakh families already receiving the benefits of affordable housing.
During a visit to the Housing for All (HFA) Division at Sankalp Bhawan in New Delhi, Sahu interacted with officials, consultants, young professionals and support staff to assess the functioning of the division and review the progress of PMAY-U 2.0. He was accompanied by Joint Secretary (HFA & Housing) Kuldip Narayan and Deputy Director General (HFA) R.K. Gautam.
The minister reviewed the PMAY-U Monitoring Dashboard, which tracks the mission’s progress through digital monitoring systems, and appreciated the use of technology to improve transparency, accountability and real-time implementation. He encouraged officials to continue adopting data-driven and citizen-centric approaches to enhance the efficiency of the affordable housing programme.
Highlighting the achievements of the flagship urban housing mission, Sahu said that of the 127 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, more than 121 lakh houses have been grounded, while over 16 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 alone.
Addressing officials of the Housing for All Division, the minister said the programme has transformed the lives of millions of urban families by providing not just houses but dignity, security and better opportunities.
“Behind every completed house is a family whose life has been transformed. You are not merely building homes; you are creating opportunities, restoring dignity and giving millions of citizens the foundation for a better future,” Sahu said while commending the team’s efforts.
The minister also highlighted the social inclusion achieved under the housing scheme. He said more than 21 lakh sanctioned houses have benefited members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, while over 5 lakh beneficiaries belong to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. Nearly 50 lakh beneficiaries are from the Other Backward Classes (OBC), and more than 22 lakh beneficiaries belong to minority communities.
Sahu further noted that the scheme has significantly contributed to women’s empowerment, with over one crore houses sanctioned either in the name of women or under joint ownership with male family members, providing greater financial security and social empowerment.
He said these achievements reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive development and extending the benefits of welfare schemes to every section of society. According to the minister, PMAY-U 2.0 has emerged as an important instrument for promoting social equity while advancing the vision of inclusive urban development.
Recalling his visits to various states and Union Territories, Sahu said interactions with beneficiaries have reinforced the transformative impact of the housing programme.
“Whenever I visit different parts of the country, I meet beneficiaries whose lives have been transformed through PMAY-U. Their smiles and stories remind us that our work is touching millions of lives,” he said, congratulating the officials and staff of the Housing for All Division for their contribution to the mission.
Concluding the review, Sahu reiterated that PMAY-U 2.0 will continue to play a key role in providing affordable housing to eligible urban families while supporting the government’s broader vision of inclusive urban development and a Viksit Bharat.
