The Aadhaar App has crossed the milestone of 5 crore downloads, reflecting growing adoption of convenient, digital-first Aadhaar services among residents and strengthening its role as a digital interface between Aadhaar number holders and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), said the Ministry of Electronics & IT in a Press Release on Thursday.
The app enables residents to access a range of Aadhaar-related services directly from their smartphones, including mobile number update, address and email updates, biometric lock/unlock and e-Aadhaar download, reducing the need to visit an Aadhaar centre.
Since its launch, the Aadhaar App has recorded strong usage, with more than 60 lakh mobile number updates, over 15 lakh address updates and more than 23 lakh email updates carried out through the app, said the Ministry of Electronics & IT.
Designed around the principle of “Show, Share and Verify”, the Aadhaar App provides Aadhaar number holders greater control over how their identity information is used while facilitating convenient and secure identity verification.
Alongside the expansion of the Aadhaar App, UIDAI is also strengthening the ecosystem for secure, consent-based offline identity verification. Since the rollout of the initiative in January, UIDAI has onboarded more than 200 entities as Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs).
The onboarding of these entities marks a significant step towards enabling secure and paperless verification through Aadhaar’s offline mechanisms, while giving service providers and residents a more convenient and privacy-focused verification framework.
Through Aadhaar offline verification methods, including QR code-based verification and secure digitally signed documents, OVSEs can verify identity information without requiring real-time connectivity to UIDAI’s central database.
The offline verification framework also reinforces a resident-centric approach by enabling Aadhaar number holders to share only the minimum information necessary for verification, thereby strengthening privacy and user control. The simplified and consent-driven verification process is aimed at enhancing trust while ensuring ease of access to services.
The expansion of the Aadhaar App and the growing adoption of offline verification mechanisms are aligned with the Government’s Digital India vision and its broader objective of improving ease of living through secure, accessible and technology-enabled public services.
