Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday launched the revamped India Code Portal, aimed at making access to laws simpler, faster and more citizen-centric.
The revamped portal, launched at Kartavya Bhavan 2 in New Delhi, introduces a range of technology-driven features, including artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted search and interaction, semantic and speech-based search, improved navigation, multilingual access and enhanced linkages between different legislative documents.
Speaking at the launch, Meghwal stressed the importance of ensuring that the Constitution and laws are easily accessible and understandable to citizens and other stakeholders. He said the revamped portal would strengthen transparency and improve citizen-centric delivery of legislative information.
Attorney General R. Venkataramani welcomed the transition from physical to digital access to laws and appreciated the new user-friendly features of the portal. He emphasised the need to keep the platform technologically updated and responsive to emerging requirements while ensuring wider and convenient access to legislation.
Secretary of the Legislative Department and Department of Legal Affairs Rajiv Mani highlighted the evolution of the India Code Portal and the efforts to provide authentic and updated legislative information to citizens, legal professionals, government departments and other stakeholders. He said the upgraded search, navigation and accessibility features would make legislative information easier to access.
Additional Secretary, Legislative Department, Manoj Kumar said access to law is the first step towards access to justice. He said the revamped portal seeks to transform India Code from a repository of legislative documents into an interconnected and citizen-centric digital gateway to law.
The upgraded platform enables users to search and navigate legislation more efficiently, access amendments and legislative history, and find links between Acts and relevant subordinate legislation. It also incorporates integration with the e-Gazette ecosystem, improved document viewing, QR-enabled access and a structured mechanism for citizen feedback.
A key feature of the revamped portal is AI-assisted multilingual access to laws in all 22 languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution. The portal also supports semantic and speech-enabled searches, enabling users to find legal information through more natural and accessible forms of interaction.
India Code serves as a unified digital repository of Central Acts and their subordinate legislation, State Acts and their subordinate legislation, as well as Union Territory legislations and regulations. The technological upgrade is intended to make this extensive body of legislative information more searchable, interconnected and usable.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to leverage digital technologies to improve ease of access to law, transparency, legal awareness and delivery of public services.
With the revamp, India Code is positioned as a technology-enabled legal information gateway aimed at reducing the gap between citizens and legislation and providing reliable legal information in a form and language that is easier for people across Bharat to access.
