Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday described Booth Level Officers (BLOs) as the foundational pillars of the world’s largest democracy, while interacting with BLOs from Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow.
Over 500 BLOs and 30 BLO Supervisors from different parts of Uttar Pradesh participated in the interaction. The CEC said the preparation of electoral rolls and the conduct of elections in India are carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution, the law and the instructions issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Describing BLOs as repositories of trust and transparency in the electoral process, Gyanesh Kumar said they serve as the ECI’s first interface with citizens. He underscored their instrumental role in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh.
“After the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls in the State in April this year, over 13.39 crore electors were included in the final Electoral Roll published in Uttar Pradesh. The exercise was carried out by 1.77 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs), with a concurrent audit by over 5.82 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by recognised political parties,” an Election Commission release said.
The BLOs also participated in a question-and-answer session with the CEC as part of the interaction.
