Early trends in the Assembly by-election results on Monday showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in Datia in Madhya Pradesh and Manjalpur in Gujarat, while the Jan Suraaj Party gained an early lead in Bankipur Assembly constituency in Bihar.
In Datia, BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari was leading by 1,184 votes over Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh after the first round of counting. Tiwari had secured 4,551 votes, while Singh polled 3,367 votes.
Reacting to the early trends, senior BJP leader Narottam Mishra expressed confidence in his party’s prospects, saying the BJP was expected to emerge victorious in the constituency.
In Bankipur, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor was leading after the second round of counting. Kishor secured 3,795 votes, opening a lead of 1,161 votes over BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar, who was in second place. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rekha Kumari was trailing with 664 votes.
In Manjalpur Assembly constituency of Gujarat, BJP candidate Satish Patel was maintaining an early lead, according to trends released by the Election Commission.
The by-elections were held on July 30 for Bankipur in Bihar, Datia in Madhya Pradesh and Manjalpur in Gujarat.
The Bankipur bypoll was necessitated after the resignation of BJP MLA Nitin Nabin, who vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
The Manjalpur seat fell vacant following the death of veteran BJP MLA and former minister Yogesh Patel, while the Datia by-election was necessitated after the disqualification of former MLA Rajendra Bharti under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
Counting of votes is underway, and final results are expected later in the day.
