India’s captive and commercial coal mining sector continued its strong growth momentum in July 2026, with coal production rising 9.61 per cent year-on-year to 14.78 million tonnes (MT), according to the Ministry of Coal.
Coal dispatches from captive and commercial mines also recorded healthy performance during the month, reaching 17.49 MT, reflecting improved mining operations and efficient evacuation of coal.
The Ministry said the steady increase in production highlights improvements in operational efficiency, enhanced mining productivity and better utilisation of mining capacities across the captive and commercial coal mining sector.
According to the ministry, the continued growth in output is expected to reduce India’s dependence on imported coal, strengthen supply chain resilience and conserve valuable foreign exchange. It also supports the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by enhancing self-reliance in a critical raw material that is essential for the country’s energy security and industrial development.
The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to unlocking the full potential of the captive and commercial mining sector through progressive policy measures, robust regulatory oversight and continued stakeholder support.
