Chennai and several neighbouring districts are likely to receive moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds until Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said, as a weak low-pressure system persists over the lower atmospheric levels along the Tamil Nadu coast.
According to the latest weather bulletin, rainfall is likely over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Ranipet districts during the period. Several districts along the Western Ghats may also experience similar weather conditions.
In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy on Saturday, with moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning likely in some parts of the city during the evening or night.
The maximum temperature in the city is expected to range between 37 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to be between 27 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has also forecast heavy rain at one or two places in the hilly areas of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris districts on August 24 and 25. Moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places in districts along the Western Ghats on August 26 and 27.
Other parts of Tamil Nadu may witness comparatively dry or partly cloudy conditions, though localised rainfall cannot be ruled out.
No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until Sunday. However, daytime temperatures may rise slightly over interior Tamil Nadu, where the maximum temperature at a few places could remain two to three degrees Celsius above normal.
Temperatures in the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, are expected to remain close to the seasonal average. High daytime temperatures and increased moisture could lead to humid conditions, particularly in Chennai and adjoining coastal districts, though thunderstorms later in the day may provide temporary relief.
Residents and travellers in areas prone to waterlogging or disruption from intense rain have been advised to remain alert. Authorities have urged people to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees and stay away from exposed areas during intense lightning activity. Motorists have also been advised to drive carefully during sudden spells of rain and strong winds.
