Delhi-NCR is likely to witness widespread rainfall on Friday as an active monsoon trough and a developing weather system over eastern India influence weather conditions across the region, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather agency has forecast intermittent to heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, over the next several days.
Rainfall is expected to remain widespread across Delhi, Haryana and Punjab on August 14, with wet conditions likely to persist until at least August 19, the IMD said.
Meteorologists attributed the forecast to the monsoon trough passing close to the National Capital Region, creating conditions favourable for persistent rainfall.
The trough currently extends from Rajasthan through Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, and its movement is expected to trigger repeated spells of rain over Delhi-NCR.
A low-pressure system near the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast is also expected to influence wind patterns over the Gangetic plains during the next 24 to 36 hours, potentially strengthening rainfall activity across northern India.
Weather conditions are expected to remain cloudy on Independence Day. During the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort on August 15, skies are likely to remain partly cloudy to overcast, with the possibility of light rain or brief showers in some areas.
However, forecasters do not expect major disruption to the Independence Day celebrations.
Officials noted that similar weather conditions prevailed around Independence Day last year, when Delhi received heavy rainfall on August 14 before conditions improved the following morning.
