Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday appealed to Opposition members to allow the House to function as protests over the alleged NEET paper leak and the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple continued in the House.
Despite his appeal, the protests persisted, forcing the Lok Sabha to be adjourned till 12 noon.
Addressing the House, Birla urged members to uphold parliamentary decorum and said democracy could be strengthened through discussion and dialogue.
“The entire world, not just India, recognises the contributions of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. That is why the world draws inspiration from him. You should also take inspiration from him. To empower and strengthen democracy in the country, engage in discussions, hold dialogues, and express your views in this House. Question Hour is an important time,” Birla said.
Invoking the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and the vision of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the Speaker said members should express their views through discussions in Parliament rather than disruptions.
“Baba Saheb Ambedkar proposed that if democracy is to be empowered and strengthened in the country, discussion and dialogue are the way forward. I urge you every time, but your conduct is not in accordance with parliamentary decorum. You should reflect on this. The House is meant for discussion and dialogue, and especially during Question Hour, for raising the important questions of honourable members. I urge you to let Question Hour proceed. You do not want the House to function. This behaviour is not appropriate. Please return to your seats and allow Question Hour to continue. The House stands adjourned till 12 noon today,” he said.
According to the Revised List of Business, the Lok Sabha is scheduled to take up The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and The Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for consideration and passing.
Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Jitan Ram Manjhi, will move the Bill, which has already been passed by the Rajya Sabha.
The House is also scheduled to take up the Kashmiri Pandits (Recourse, Restitution, Rehabilitation and Resettlement) Bill, 2025. (ANI)
