Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the role of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) in transforming public procurement through greater transparency, wider participation and better opportunities.
The Prime Minister shared an article by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal detailing the achievements of GeM as the digital procurement platform completes a decade of its operations.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said technology has been at the core of GeM’s transformation of public procurement over the last 10 years. He said the platform has strengthened Ease of Doing Business by creating a more competitive and inclusive ecosystem.
The Prime Minister particularly highlighted GeM’s role in empowering micro, small and medium enterprises and women entrepreneurs by providing them greater access to government procurement opportunities.
Goyal, in a separate post on X, said GeM had emerged as a major success story in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of a decade ago.
He highlighted the platform’s contribution to improving transparency, speed, quality, inclusivity and accountability in public procurement while also supporting economic growth.
GeM was launched in 2016 as a digital platform to provide government departments and organisations with a transparent and efficient mechanism for procuring goods and services.
Over the past decade, the platform has expanded significantly, connecting government buyers with sellers and service providers across the country. It has also widened participation for MSMEs, startups, women entrepreneurs and businesses from smaller towns.
By digitising the procurement process, GeM has sought to reduce barriers to participation, improve competition and create greater accountability through technology-driven processes.
As GeM enters its second decade, the government has emphasised its continued evolution as a more competitive and inclusive digital public procurement ecosystem.
Over the past decade, GeM has emerged as a key pillar of India’s digital public procurement ecosystem, combining transparency, efficiency and wider market access. With more than ₹20 lakh crore in cumulative transaction value and growing participation from MSMEs, startups and women entrepreneurs, the platform is playing an important role in supporting inclusive growth, strengthening domestic businesses and ensuring more efficient use of public funds.
