Gurugram was inundated following around an hour of heavy rainfall on Monday, with waterlogging reported across several parts of the city and traffic movement slowing on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and other key roads.
The district administration said Gurugram received 70 mm of rainfall by 1:30 pm.
Waterlogging was reported in Narsinghpur, Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and several areas of old Gurugram. Vehicles were stranded in water around Rajiv Chowk, while school buses and ambulances were also caught in waterlogging on Sohna Road.
Other badly affected areas included Railway Road, Sector 5, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road and Basai Road. The Naharpur underpass was also waterlogged.
Traffic movement on several roads remained slow as commuters were forced to wade through flooded streets. Waterlogging in parts of old Gurugram, including Sadar Bazar, Gurdwara Road and Old Delhi Road, resulted in traffic jams through the afternoon.
A senior traffic police officer said vehicular movement was severely affected near the Sirhaul border, Rajiv Chowk, Narsinghpur and several other locations.
Traffic police personnel were deployed at affected stretches to regulate movement and manage congestion, the officer said.
A large section of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway near Cyber Hub, opposite Gateway Tower Metro station, was submerged, disrupting traffic on the major thoroughfare.
Sheetla Mata Road, which has emerged as one of Gurugram’s flood-prone locations this monsoon, was also among the worst-affected stretches.
Municipal Corporation officials remained on the ground during the rainfall to monitor the situation.
Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya and Additional Municipal Commissioner Yash Jaluka inspected waterlogging-prone areas along with officials from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, National Highways Authority of India and Municipal Corporation.
Dahiya directed officials to keep pumping arrangements operational in waterlogged areas and ensure that response teams reach affected locations immediately after receiving reports of waterlogging.
Officials were also instructed to drain accumulated water at the earliest to minimise disruption to traffic and commuters.
