All schools, colleges and other educational institutions in Kullu subdivision of Himachal Pradesh were closed on Tuesday in view of heavy rains and the risk of landslides, road blockades and flash floods.
Kullu Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jaibanti Thakur issued an order in the morning after the weather department forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region.
The Shimla Meteorological Office has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur districts.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), torrential rains have led to the closure of 259 roads, disrupted 54 water supply schemes and affected 161 transformers across the state.
Mandi reported the highest number of road closures at 120, followed by Chamba with 42, Kullu 40, Shimla 30, Sirmaur 15, Kangra five, Una four, Lahaul and Spiti two, and Kinnaur one.
The Mandi-Manali stretch of the Kiratpur-Manali National Highway was closed to vehicular traffic following a landslide near the Jhalogi tunnel in Mandi district. Officials said the road would be reopened after the rain subsides and the situation returns to normal.
Moderate to heavy rain has lashed parts of the state since 4 pm on Monday. Bhattiyat recorded the highest rainfall at 95.2 mm, followed by Dharamshala (74.1 mm), Bajaura (67.5 mm), Palampur (66.4 mm), Jot (51 mm), Jogindernagar (50 mm), Pandoh (43.8 mm), Kangra (40.2 mm), Sujanpur Tira (38.2 mm), Sarahan (37.7 mm), Bhuntar (37.4 mm) and Nagrota Suriyan (37.2 mm).
