Indian Railways has approved the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Level Crossing No. 305 on the Geratpur-Ahmedabad section of Western Railway in Gujarat at an estimated cost of ₹153 crore.
The project is aimed at improving road safety and ensuring smoother movement of road traffic in the densely populated urban area where the level crossing is located.
The ROB has been sanctioned under Western Railway’s ongoing umbrella programme covering the construction of road over and under bridges, foot over bridges, drainage improvement and rebuilding of existing road over and under bridges.
106-metre railway bridge
According to the Ministry of Railways, the railway bridge portion of the new structure will have a total length of 106 metres and will consist of two composite girders, each measuring 53 metres.
The bridge will be followed by a 150-metre viaduct, while the railway approach will extend for around 595 metres. The longer approaches and larger structure have been necessitated by the location of the crossing in a densely populated urban area.
Relief from level-crossing congestion
Once completed, the four-lane ROB will eliminate the need for road users to wait for trains at the level crossing, allowing vehicles to move continuously across the railway line.
The project is expected to provide commuters with safer passage, reduce travel time and ease congestion in the area.
The approval is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to eliminate level crossings and strengthen road and rail safety infrastructure. The project is also aimed at improving connectivity and developing modern and efficient transport infrastructure in urban areas.
