Indian Railways records 9% growth in freight loading in July, transports over 141 million tonnes

Indian Railways recorded a 9 per cent year-on-year growth in freight loading during July 2026, transporting 141.3 million tonnes of freight compared to 129.7 million tonnes in the corresponding month last year, reflecting sustained demand from key sectors of the economy and improved operational efficiency.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the growth in freight movement was driven by higher loading of major commodities critical to industry, agriculture and energy security. Iron ore loading registered the highest increase of 22.2 per cent, while fertilizers grew by 12 per cent. Loading of food grains and coal each increased by 11.5 per cent, while other commodities recorded a 12.1 per cent rise over July 2025.

To meet rising energy demand, Railways also significantly enhanced coal transportation to thermal power stations. Domestic coal supply to power plants increased by 20 per cent during July compared to the same period last year, supporting the country’s power generation requirements.

The increase in freight traffic translated into stronger revenue performance, with freight earnings rising by ₹1,137 crore over July 2025, registering an 8 per cent year-on-year growth.

Among the railway zones, East Central Railway and Eastern Railway recorded the highest freight revenue growth of 33 per cent each. West Central Railway posted a growth of 23 per cent, while South Eastern Railway registered an increase of 10.33 per cent.

Passenger traffic also continued its upward trend during the month. Indian Railways carried 63.35 crore passengers in July 2026, compared to 62.19 crore passengers in July 2025. Growth was recorded across both suburban and non-suburban services, indicating increasing reliance on rail transport for daily commuting as well as long-distance travel.

The Ministry said the steady rise in both freight and passenger operations reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on strengthening logistics, improving operational efficiency and expanding rail infrastructure. It added that sustained investments in capacity augmentation and customer-centric initiatives are helping the national transporter play a crucial role in supporting economic growth, ensuring energy security and providing reliable mobility to millions of passengers across the country.
