Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted India’s efforts towards the long-term conservation of elephants on the occasion of World Elephant Day.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the elephant has remained an integral part of India’s ecological heritage and noted that India is home to over 60 per cent of the world’s wild Asian elephants.
PM Modi said India has 33 Elephant Reserves, which provide habitats for elephants and strengthen efforts towards their long-term conservation.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the contribution of forest personnel, scientists, veterinarians, mahouts and local communities, describing them as integral to India’s elephant conservation efforts.
He said the occasion is an opportunity to celebrate the majestic elephant while recognising the collective efforts being made to protect the species and preserve India’s ecological heritage.
