India’s industrial activity remained resilient in July 2026, with the overall Index of Industrial Production (IIP) standing at 124.8, unchanged from the revised level recorded in June, according to the latest official data.
The data, based on the 2022-23 base year and the NIC 2025 classification, showed that the manufacturing sector, which carries the largest weight in the index, recorded an index of 127.4 in July, up from 125.3 in June.
The mining sector, however, witnessed a decline, with its index falling to 94.4 in July from 110.6 in June. Electricity generation also increased, with the electricity index rising to 134.8 in July from 132.3 in June.
The manufacturing sector, with a weight of 76.062, remained the main contributor to industrial activity. Among major manufacturing segments, motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers recorded a sharp rise, with the index increasing from 128.4 in June to 146.4 in July.
Other transport equipment also registered strong growth, with its index rising from 162.5 in June to 174.9 in July. The index for fabricated metal products increased from 135.1 to 137.7, while basic metals rose from 129.8 to 134.1.
The computer, electronic and optical products segment also remained strong, with its index rising to 156.2 in July from 154.2 in June. Electrical equipment, however, declined from 179.4 to 168.1 during the month.
Among other sectors, rubber and plastics products increased to 127.6 in July from 124.1 in June, while other non-metallic mineral products rose to 131.7 from 130.6. The index for leather and related products climbed to 113.2 from 108.0.
The textiles sector remained broadly stable at 135.5 in July compared with 135.8 in June, while wearing apparel declined to 95.9 from 98.1. Food products increased to 106 from 103.6, while beverages fell sharply to 127.5 from 152.7.
The pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products segment declined to 119.0 in July from 123.7 in June. Chemicals and chemical products, meanwhile, increased to 109.8 from 108.0.
The index for machinery and equipment fell to 128.6 in July from 135.7, while furniture increased marginally to 125.4 from 123.8. Printing and reproduction of recorded media rose to 101.8 from 99.5.
In the mining sector, all three broad categories recorded declines in July. The index for fuel minerals fell to 94.5 from 98.4, while metallic minerals dropped sharply to 102.3 from 141.9. The index for non-metallic minerals declined to 89.6 from 112.4.
The electricity sector showed continued strength. Its index increased to 134.8 in July, compared with 132.3 in June. Within the sector, the index for renewable sources rose sharply to 186.1 from 164.5, while non-renewable electricity declined to 119.6 from 122.7.
The combined electricity and gas index increased to 133.5 in July from 131.8 in June. The gas index, however, declined to 114.9 from 125.0.
The data also showed continued improvement in water supply, sewerage and waste management. The combined index rose to 148.4 in July from 145.7 in June. Within this, water supply increased to 157.8 from 157.4, while sewerage and waste management rose to 138.1 from 132.9.
The overall industrial index had risen from 117.0 in July 2025 to 124.8 in July 2026. The figures for July 2026 are Quick Estimates.
