Lok Sabha adjourned sine die, stormy Monsoon Session ends amid Opposition protests

The Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Thursday, bringing the Monsoon Session to a close amid repeated disruptions and Opposition protests over the alleged police action against protesting students and other issues.

As soon as the House assembled, all six stanzas of the national song were played, following which Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House sine die.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were present in the House when it met briefly.

The Speaker did not deliver the customary valedictory address highlighting the performance and productivity of the House during the session.

Birla had repeatedly appealed to Opposition members to participate in debates during the session. However, protests and sloganeering continued, leading to repeated adjournments.

On Thursday as well, Opposition members raised slogans against the government before the House was adjourned.

The Monsoon Session began on July 20 and witnessed protests by Opposition parties over the NEET paper leak issue and allegations concerning donations to the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The Opposition later sought a response from Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged police action against students protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20. The students were demanding accountability over the NEET paper leak and issues concerning the education system.

On Wednesday, Shah said he was ready to participate in a debate on the students’ issue and respond to questions raised by Opposition members. He had also urged the Speaker to allocate time for a discussion in consultation with the Opposition.
