The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Tuesday amid heavy sloganeering by Opposition members during Question Hour.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appealed to members to stop the sloganeering and allow the House to function smoothly.
Birla said disruptions were against the spirit of democracy and stressed the need for debate and discussion in the House. He also said the government had assured that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was ready to discuss the issue of the students’ protest.
The Opposition, however, continued to demand the presence of the Home Minister for a discussion on the alleged police action against students during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march at Jantar Mantar on July 20.
As the protests continued and the din did not subside, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 pm.
Earlier in the day, NDA MPs staged a protest march towards Makar Dwar of Parliament, carrying placards targeting the Opposition over the proposed discussion on the students’ protest.
The BJP alleged that Opposition parties and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi were avoiding the discussion despite the government’s assurance that Home Minister Amit Shah would make a statement on the issue.
The issue relates to the police action during the July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar over the NEET paper leak and other examination-related irregularities. Opposition parties have been demanding a response from the Home Minister over what they have described as police action against protesting students.
The Monsoon Session has witnessed repeated disruptions over several issues, including examination-related irregularities, the Jantar Mantar protest and other matters raised by Opposition parties.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, with several pending legislative matters listed for consideration during the remaining days.
