Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely over Gangetic West Bengal till Wednesday morning due to a low-pressure area over the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
The weather system is likely to move northwestwards across Jharkhand and north Odisha, according to weather officials.
Sultry conditions have prevailed over Kolkata and adjoining districts of south Bengal over the past few days, causing discomfort among residents.
The IMD said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are likely at some places in North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, Kolkata and Howrah.
An active monsoon trough is also likely to bring heavy rainfall over the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar till Wednesday, the weather department said.
The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea till Tuesday morning as squally winds are expected along and off the West Bengal and Odisha coasts and over the north Bay of Bengal.
