Several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, over the next few days, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast.
The weather department said an atmospheric circulation prevailing over the north Tamil Nadu coastal region is expected to influence weather conditions across the state.
Under its influence, several districts are likely to receive light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning on Monday. Strong surface winds of up to 50 kmph may occur at isolated places during thunderstorms.
Rainfall activity is expected to become more pronounced over the Western Ghats and northern coastal districts on August 12 and 13. These areas could receive moderate rain as moisture-laden winds and prevailing atmospheric conditions favour the development of rain-bearing clouds.
Other parts of the state are also likely to experience scattered showers, though the intensity and distribution of rainfall may vary.
The RMC has advised residents to exercise caution while venturing outdoors during thunderstorms, particularly in the event of lightning and strong winds.
Despite the rainfall, warmer conditions are likely to persist over parts of northern interior Tamil Nadu, where maximum temperatures could remain up to three degrees Celsius above normal until August 13. High daytime temperatures combined with moisture may also lead to humid conditions.
In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are expected during the day, with conditions becoming favourable for rain towards the evening or night. The city and its suburbs may receive light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The unsettled weather is likely to continue intermittently across Tamil Nadu ahead of Independence Day on August 15. While widespread heavy rainfall has not been forecast, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds could disrupt outdoor activities in some areas.
Weather conditions are expected to vary across coastal, interior and Western Ghats districts as the atmospheric circulation continues to influence the state.
