Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said a newly widened road in Gorakhpur would allow commuters travelling towards Varanasi, Lucknow, Nepal and several eastern Uttar Pradesh districts to bypass the city, easing traffic congestion and improving regional connectivity.
Adityanath, who was in Gorakhpur, inaugurated the two-lane Green City-Madhopur Bandha road, constructed and strengthened at a cost of around Rs 70 crore.
The chief minister said sustained development and improved connectivity had transformed Gorakhpur and given the city a new identity, with the government focusing on making everyday life easier for residents through better roads, connectivity and civic infrastructure.
Addressing a gathering near the sewage treatment plant in Netaji Subhash Chandra Nagar, he said the area had been inhabited for several years and had also witnessed the development of educational institutions.
However, the narrow road had caused inconvenience to residents and hampered the movement of heavy vehicles, he said.
The newly constructed stretch is expected to ease traffic congestion and address the longstanding problem of waterlogging in the area. Drains have also been constructed on both sides of the road to facilitate water drainage and mitigate waterlogging.
Highlighting the road’s importance, Adityanath said commuters travelling towards Varanasi, Lucknow, Nepal, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj and Balrampur would no longer have to pass through the city.
He said the Rajghat-Habert Bandha-Madhopur embankment road was also being developed as a four-lane corridor, while a flyover had been proposed at Domingarh.
Once completed, these projects would enable commuters to use the Domingarh four-lane bypass to reach Kalesar and connect with the Lucknow route, he said.
Similarly, commuters heading towards Nepal and Sonauli would be able to take the route via Mahesra, further strengthening regional connectivity, the chief minister said.
Adityanath said several infrastructure projects were being implemented across Gorakhpur to improve civic amenities and ensure smoother travel for residents.
During the programme, the chief minister also extended greetings to citizens on Sawan Shivratri and prayed to Lord Shiva for their happiness and prosperity.
Before addressing the gathering, Adityanath inaugurated the road by cutting a ribbon amid Vedic chants at its starting point near the Green City turn on the Gorakhpur-Sonauli highway. He also unveiled the foundation plaque.
He later travelled along the newly developed stretch to inspect the road before reaching the public meeting venue.
Residents welcomed the chief minister at several points along the route, with crowds gathering at around a dozen locations, raising slogans and showering flowers as his convoy passed. Two decorated elephants were also stationed along the route as part of the welcome.
The project is expected to benefit residents of Green City and adjoining colonies by improving access and reducing traffic-related problems.
