The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully implemented the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at Shahjahanpur Toll Plaza on the Delhi–Jaipur section of National Highway-48, making travel from Manesar to Jaipur completely barrier-free.
With the rollout at Shahjahanpur, the toll plaza has become the third on the Delhi–Jaipur corridor in Rajasthan to adopt the MLFF system, following Daulatpura and Manoharpura toll plazas.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), the barrier-less tolling system enables vehicles to pass through toll locations without stopping, eliminating physical barriers and reducing human intervention in toll collection. The system is expected to improve traffic flow by ensuring zero waiting time, while helping commuters save travel time, improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle emissions at toll plazas.
The MLFF system combines Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology with FASTag-based Electronic Toll Collection, allowing user fees to be collected automatically without requiring vehicles to halt.
The Ministry said the initiative is aligned with the Government of India’s vision of using technology to deliver citizen-centric services while enhancing the ease of travel, ease of living and ease of doing business.
To ensure a seamless travel experience, highway users have been advised to maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts. In cases of insufficient balance, invalid or non-functional FASTags, an electronic notice (e-notice) will be issued for non-payment of the user fee.
Users are required to pay the applicable toll within 72 hours of receiving the e-notice. If the payment is not made within the stipulated period, the toll amount will be charged at twice the normal rate for the respective vehicle category.
The Ministry said the implementation of the Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system is expected to strengthen the country’s tolling ecosystem by improving transparency, reducing operational costs associated with physical toll plazas and enhancing the overall efficiency of toll operations.
